Biography contributed by Bernadette Siebert

Rosetta was born Rosetta Mary FOSTER in 1874 at Picton, New Zealand. Her parents were William Pinder FOSTER and Sarah Ann nee BURGESS who were married in 1857 in Stepney London. His occupation then was steward on a ship. Nine children were born In England with four of them dying under one year old.

The Fosters arrived in Wellington October 25th 1872 on the ship Bebington after a journey of nearly four months. Because there were 16 deaths on board, all of infants, an inquiry was launched on the ship’s arrival in NZ. William and Sarah’s youngest child Alice was one of those who died, of diarrhoea. On their arrival, they went on to Picton where their last two children were born, including Rosetta in 1874.

In 1890 Rosetta Mary married 22-year-old Albert Edward RAGG. He was a master mariner and was from a seafaring family. His father was Captain Joseph H RAGG who ran a regular cutter from Warkworth to Auckland. Seven children were born to the couple:

  • Daisy Matilda (1890-1961)
  • Alfred Edward (1892- )
  • George William Henry (1893-1894)
  • Sylvia Rosetta (1896-1929 )
  • Joseph Higginson Henry (1903-1983)
  • Mavis Tryphena (1909-1984)
  • George Albert William (1917-1994)

To begin with, Albert and Rosetta set up home in East Street, Auckland Central. And by the 1905-6 electoral roll, Albert was listed as Master of the ketch ‘Jane’.

From 1911 until they died, Albert and Rosetta lived at 33 Murdoch Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland. Albert’s occupation is listed variously as waterside worker, or seaman.

Rosetta died on 20 June 1938 aged 63 years. She died without leaving a will but her husband made an affidavit listing her five living children and that her effects were less than 100 pounds. Her husband Albert Edward died on 26 June 1947 aged 78 years. They are both buried in the Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland.

Rosetta is the daughter-in-law of Elizabeth RAGG #378 on the petition.
