Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Agnes Leck was born in 1837 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England – the daughter of Robert Leck, a watchmaker, and Agnes Smith.

Shortly after her birth her family moved to Scotland.

Jane had two children with Charles Cowan Rose, a clerk, before they emigrated to New Zealand about 1861.

Charles was declared insolvent in 1869 and they had six more children, one who died in infancy, before they married in 1873.

A further two children were born after their marriage, one who died at 18-days-old.

The year 1877 was a bad time for the family - on 5 June 5-year-old Sarah died, then on 30 June 13-month-old James also died. The following month on 6 July 7-year-old Elizabeth died then just 10 days later Charles died at the age of 37.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition she was living in Dundas St, Dunedin either with or near her daughter Violet. (See 66 V Millar)

Jane died on 18 April 1912, she is buried with Charles in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
