Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth McCutcheon Brown was born about 1840 in Wigtownshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Brown, a shoemaker, and Agnes McCutcheon.

She married John Samson, a baker, on 29 December 1865 in Glasgow and they had four children before they emigrated to New Zealand about 1874.

They settled in Dunedin and had a further five children.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Kensington, South Dunedin.

She died at her home on 15 October 1911. John died in 1916, they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
