Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Alison Langlands was born on 14 November 1836 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of William Langlands, a carpenter and architect, and Alison Seggie.

Alison emigrated to Otago with her parents in 1850 on the Eden and on 14 November 1854 she married James Scott, a carpenter, in Dunedin.

They had 13 children, 12 of whom were still alive when James died suddenly at their home, Marylea Farm, Clarksville, in the Tokomairiro district in 1887.

Alison lost three of her children during the next two years. Eighteen year old Margaret died in December 1888, nine year old Christine in March 1889, and one week later 11 year old Albert.

Alison moved to Dunedin soon after and, when she signed the suffrage petition, she was living in Heriot Row. She later lived in Christchurch where she died on 25 June 1903. She is buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton, with her husband and some of her children.
