Margaret/Maggie Quertier Morton was born in 1864 in South Otago – the daughter of William Morton, a farmer, and Jane Gilchrist. (See 106 Jane G Morton)

She married John Shields, a farmer, at her home 'Underwood' at Puerua on 29 January 1886 and they had two children.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Puerua.

They later moved to Flag Swamp, north of Dunedin, where John died in 1931.

Margaret died at Mosgiel on 24 May 1956, they are buried together in the Waikouaiti Cemetery.
