Catherine Hay was born on 8 January 1834 in Portmoak, Kinrosshire, Scotland – the daughter of David Hay, a mason, and Janet Hume.
She married James Taylor on 19 November 1863 in Portmoak and they emigrated to New Zealand soon after their marriage.
They had two daughters and lived in Duncan St, Dunedin where Catherine signed the suffrage petition.
James died in the Dunedin Hospital in 1905 and Catherine died at her home on 10 October 1921.
They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
