Remains of I-1 Japanese submarine

The Japanese submarine I-1 after being driven ashore by HMNZS Kiwi and Moa in January 1943.

In 1968 HMNZS Otago brought the I-1’s deck gun back to Auckland for the Navy Museum’s collection.

Geeat article... Even though the allies were reading the Japanese encrypted code at the time the destruction of I-1 and subsequently the allies finding many key documents and codes onboard were key to future success. Well done Kiwis!

just wish we had more background on why the Japanese oddly abandoned the ship like that or how they they were killed in the battle...
