16 June 1840Sheet 6 — The Bay of Plenty (Fedarb) Sheet
The Bay of Plenty (Fedarb) treaty sheet was signed by 12 Ngāti Awa rangatira (chiefs) at Whakatāne on 16 June 1840. Most of the signatories were from the Ngāti Pūkeko hapū (subtribe).
The trader James W. Fedarb, trading master of the schooner Mercury, was responsible for the treaty sheet taken around the Bay of Plenty and held a signing at Pōhaturoa rock, Whakatāne. Robert Maunsell, an Anglican missionary based at Maraetai, Waikato Heads, witnessed the signatures.
The gifts given out at Whakatāne included 11 pipes, four ditto boxes, three looking glasses, 51 pounds of tobacco, four rows of beads and a slate.
Since 1990, Ngāti Awa have held a dawn ceremony at Pōhaturoa rock every year on 16 June to commemorate the signing.
