Hōhepa Poutama signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 28 April 1840 at Kaitāia.

He was appointed as a land assessor in 1850.

Hōhepa Poutama died on 14 May 1876 at the age of 75. A death notice in Te Waka Maori o Niu Tirani noted that he ‘had been an assessor for many years, and was very attentive and painstaking in the discharge of the duties of his office.’ [1]
