Biographical information provided by Fiona Oliver for the He Tohu exhibition:

Caroline Newsome was born in 1863, probably not in New Zealand. In 1885 she married William Bourdot, an Irishman who had emigrated with his family as a youth 10 years earlier. The year after her marriage, Caroline had twin daughters, one of whom died at 3 months old. She went on to have more children: Selina, Lucy, Ivy, Ernest, Frederick and Louis. Her husband was a watchmaker and jeweller, and had premises on May’s Road. It may have doubled as their home, as it is where Caroline signed the petition. She died in Wellington, where she had moved to live with her married daughter, in 1944, aged 81.
