Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash for the He Tohu exhibition:

Agnes Gray Nimmo Mathieson, born in 1861, was the second of 11 children of John Mathieson and Jane Nimmo and the last to be born in their home of Lanarkshire, Scotland. The family moved from Scotland to Auckland some time before the birth of her next sister Jane in 1863.

At school Agnes won prizes for reading, spelling, mathematics and needlework.

Agnes died suddenly in 1908 at the age of 47. The New Zealand Herald noted the following day that she had appeared to be in her usual good health before complaining of pain in her head, dying shortly afterwards.
