Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Shields was born on 11 December 1846 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of John Shields and Elizabeth Miller. (See 106 John Shields)

She emigrated to Otago with her parents in 1848 on the Blundell and they lived at 'Shieldhill Farm' at Andersons Bay near Dunedin for a year before moving to Puerua.

Agnes married John Johnston in 1868 and they had, at least, five children. She signed the suffrage petition at her home in Romahapa.

John died in 1896 and Agnes died at her home on 31 March 1927, they are buried in the Romahapa Cemetery.
