Alice Rene Qualtrough was the oldest of seven sisters (she had no brothers) and was raised on the family’s farms in the Waikato region. It was an isolated area, and the girls had to walk four miles to the schoolhouse at Kihikihi. With no boys in the family, Alice and her sisters did a lot of manual work on the farm. In February 1900 she married a local farmer, George McGhie, at her parent’s house, by then in Cambridge. Alice moved to Te Awamutu with her husband. She had three children, George, Bill and Jessie. Alice died on 8 April 1929 and was buried at Kihikihi.

Sorry, but this is the wrong Alice Qualtrough. The one who signed, was James Qualtrough junior's wife, nee Alice Farnsworth, and they married in 1886. The Auckland based Alice, also signed theb1892 Suffrage petition. Her husband James Qualtrough, died intestate in 1896, and I didn't find her voting that year. By 1900 she was most likely living with her brother, Charles Farnsworth, a Cabinet maker; when she died in 1919, she left all she had to her brother Charles, who died in 1921. They are buried in the same grave in the Otahuhu Cemetery, Area 2 Lot No 36. In loving memory of Alice, beloved wife of the late James Qualtrough, died June 25th 1919 aged 69 yrs, also Charles Farnsworth, brother of the above, died Jan. 16th 1921 aged 59 yrs." (Headstone broken). According to the Historical BDMs website a Catherine Alice Qualtrough married George Robert McGhie in 1900. The Qualtrough family, originally from the Isle of Man, emigrated to New Zealand in 1859 on the ship Mermaid to Auckland.
