Alice Sophia Barnes was born in New Zealand in 1874, the daughter of George Henry Barnes, a bailiff, and Bridget Alice Keys.
When Alice signed the suffrage petition she was living with her parents in London St, Dunedin. Her mother Bridget also signed the petition.
Alice married George Samuel Bishop, an artilleryman, in 1905. They had five children.
In 1916 Staff Sergeant Major George S Bishop was appointed as temporary area officer for Gore.
Alice appeared in the news in 1919 when a young man she had leased, then sold, a bakery to in Gore was declared bankrupt. Alice was owed £70.
George died in 1937 and is buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin. Alice died in on 28 February 1945 and is buried in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
