Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ann Marriott was born about 1822 in Nottinghamshire, England. She married Thomas Morris, an agricultural labourer, in 1844 and they had seven children, two who died in infancy.

In 1858 the family emigrated to Otago on the Nourmahal – their eighth and youngest child was born on board the ship.

They settled, at first, on Portobello Rd on the Otago Peninsula where they had a market garden.

Thomas was declared insolvent in 1865, the land was sold by auction and Thomas spent some time in jail.

They later farmed at Highcliff where Thomas died in 1905 and where Ann signed the suffrage petition.

Ann died on 10 July 1905, she is buried with Thomas in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
