Biographical information provided for the He Tohu exhibition:

Annie Urquhart was born in 1865, the sixth daughter of Thomas Urquhart and Margaret McKenzie, and one of nineteen children. She married John Deroles in 1891, but her father did not approve of her choice. Annie had to walk two or three miles to the church for her wedding, rather than marrying at the family home, Poyntzfield, like her eight sisters. Her brother David was the only member of her family to accompany her. But John Deroles was a successful farmer and eventually (according to reports) became the favourite son-in-law. The couple had eight children.

Annie was a talented musician and in 1913 composed the ‘Ahine Waltz’, which was popular at local dances. She died in 1959.
