Annie McFarlane Alexander was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of Andrew Alexander, a clerk, and Annie Mitchell.
She grew up in Dunedin and attended the Dunedin Normal School.
Annie was appointed to the positon of pupil teacher at Union St School in Dunedin in 1882.
When Annie signed the suffrage petition she was living in Enfield in North Otago working as a teacher at Tenearaki School.
She resigned her position in 1898 and she died at her mother’s home in Dunedin on 2 February 1909.
Annie is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
