Barbara Gordon Davidson was born in 1867 in New Zealand, the daughter of Andrew Davidson, a station master, and Mary Mackay.

On 30 October 1889, Barbara married James Brown, a pastry cook, at her parent’s house in Sawyers Bay, Dunedin. They had four daughters.

When she signed the suffrage petition, Barbara and her family were living in Cumberland St, Dunedin. Her sister Grace also signed the petition.

Barbara died in 1964 (James had predeceased her). She was cremated at the Purewa Cemetery, Auckland.
