Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Annie Doveton was born in 1848 in Victoria, Australia – daughter of Francis Crossman Doveton, a goldfields commissioner, and Margaret Bostock.

On 3 June 1875, Annie married William Boyle Boyd, commander of the ship Rangitikei, at St Pauls Cathedral, Dunedin.

Shortly after their marriage Annie and William went to England where they had three or four children and where William was master of the Hurunui. William was suspended for a year in 1876 when the Hurunui collided with another ship and seven lives were lost, William did not give assistance to the other vessel.

The family were back in New Zealand by 1884 where William worked as manager of the New Zealand Shipping Co., and another four children were born.

William died in 1899 in England, where he and Annie had gone to consult a specialist in liver diseases. Annie returned to Dunedin where two of her sons died in 1900 and 1902.

In 1908 an auction sale was advertised for the contents of 'Crocombe', 108 Maitland St – the residence of Mrs W B Boyd (who was leaving New Zealand).

Annie died on 17 May 1917 at Hangersley, Ringwood, Hampshire.
