She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1875 on the Christian McAusland.

They lived for a time in Invercargill, they in Clinton before moving to Gore around 1889.

Catherine married carpenter William Ballintine on 3 August 1892 at Gore where she later signed the suffrage petition.

They had five children and lived in Christchurch and Wellington.

In 1916 Catherine commenced a suit for divorce against William who had deserted her for the last three years and was living in New South Wales – the divorce was granted in 1917.
