Catherine Hay Campbell was born on 13 May 1872 in Lauder, Berwickshire – the daughter of Peter Campbell, a shoemaker, and Catherine Hay.
She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1875 on the Christian McAusland.
They lived for a time in Invercargill, they in Clinton before moving to Gore around 1889.
Catherine married carpenter William Ballintine on 3 August 1892 at Gore where she later signed the suffrage petition.
They had five children and lived in Christchurch and Wellington.
In 1916 Catherine commenced a suit for divorce against William who had deserted her for the last three years and was living in New South Wales – the divorce was granted in 1917.
Catherine died in New South Wales on 9 July 1960 – she is buried in the Macquarie Park Cemetery.
