Catherine Wilson was born about 1831 in Aberdeen, Scotland.

She married William Duncan, an engineer, on 9 September 1862 in Aberdeen and they had seven children, one who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Invercargill.

They settled in Dunedin and when Catherine signed the suffrage petition they were living in Eden St, Dunedin and William was working as a building contractor.

William died in 1917 and Catherine died on 4 November 1921, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
