Catherine Larkin was born in 1833 in Glasgow, and married James Edmiston, a fellow Scot. They migrated to New Zealand around 1862, and settled in Auckland with their three children, having another five here.

The family lived in Ponsonby for over forty years, first in Russell Street and later in Wood Street. They were often mentioned in the social pages of the Auckland papers.
