Clara Miriam Newnham was born in 1869, the only daughter of Eliza and William Thomas Newnham. Her father was the mayor of Kaiapoi, and died when Clara was a baby. When she was 25 she married Albert Howes, a masseur and commercial traveller, and they moved to Wellington. They had one daughter, Alicia. By 1914 they had moved to Dunedin, where they stayed. After Clara was widowed in 1930, she lived with her daughter until she died in 1964 at the age of 94.
