Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Alice Mary Clayforth was born in 1865 in London, England, the daughter of George Clayforth, an admiralty clerk and Mary Jane Greenwood.
The family emigrated to New Zealand in the 1880s and settled, at first, in Dunedin.
When she signed the suffrage petition, Alice was living with her family in St Heliers Court, Caversham Rise, Dunedin.
In 1896, she married Ernest George Lilly, an insurance broker, and they had one child. They shifted to Auckland about 1909 and, in 1918, they separated by mutual consent and lived apart.
They divorced in 1923 and Ernest re-married the following year.
Alice died on 18 May 1943. She is buried in the Hillsborough Cemetery, Auckland.
