Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Hird Cooper was born on 8 March 1865 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of James Cooper, a bootmaker, and Elizabeth Donley.

The family emigrated to Canterbury in 1874 on the City of Glasgow, settling in Dunedin.

Agnes' sister Mary also signed the 1893 suffrage petiion. Agnes married Robert Blyth Dawson McRobie on 28 February 1894 at her parent’s residence.

The family featured in the newspaper in 1897, when Agnes’ brother James Cooper assaulted her husband with a candlestick and the police were called.

They had five children before Agnes died in 1904. She is buried in the Southern Cemetery with her two year old son Victor who died three days before her.
