Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Dora Annie/Dorothea Sarney was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1870 – the daughter of William Henry Sarney, a smith, and Hannah Marshall. (See 30 H M Sarney)

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Tweed and they settled in Dunedin.

Dorothea signed the suffrage petition with her family in Cumberland Street although the electoral roll shows her living in, nearby, Castle St working as a machinist.

She did not marry and she died at her mother’s home in George St on 15 February 1923 - she is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
