Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Ellen Bewley was born about 1851 in South Africa – the daughter of James Bewley, a baker, and Hannah Huddlestone Freer.
Her family moved to Australia in the late 1850’s then moved again to Otago in 1865.
Ellen married Edward Aldred, a pastrycook, on 26 January 1882 in Dunedin and they had twin daughters in December of that year.
When Ellen signed the suffrage petition the family were living in George Street. Her sister Elizabeth Bewley also signed the petition (See 47 E. Bewley).
Ellen died at her home on 25 November 1922 and Edward died in 1929 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
