Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emilie Caroline Wilhelmine Deihle/Deyhle was born about 1846 in Stuttgart, Germany – the daughter of Johann Joseph Christian Deyhle and Anna Barbara Frech.

She emigrated to Canterbury with her two sisters in 1872 on the Palmerston and the following year she married Julius Berthold Apstein, a master mariner.

They had seven children and when Emilie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in William St, Dunedin.

In 1911 Julius, who was working as time-keeper at the Union Co., 'disappeared mysteriously', he was last seen 'walking in the direction of Lawyers Head'.

His body was not found but he was declared dead the following year.

Emilie died at her home on 5 September 1919, she is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
