Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Eliza Elsie Nichol was born in 1872 in Bluff, Southland – the daughter of Samuel Nichol, a merchant, and Eliza Annie Kingswell. (See 341 Eliza A Nichol)

When Eliza signed the suffrage petition she was living at the family home 'Morningside' in Bluff.

She married Charles Edward Shallcrass, Inspector of the Colonial Bank of NZ, at the new Presbyterian Church in Bluff on 4 July 1894.

After the wedding they 'left for a tour of the North Island amid hearty congratulations and showers of rice and flowers.'

They had three sons and lived in Timaru.

Eliza died on 28 June 1934 at St George’s Hospital in Christchurch, she was cremated in Dunedin.

Charles re-married the following year – he died in 1944 and is buried in the Fairfield Cemetery, Nelson.
