Ellen/Helen Fernie Melville Jenkins was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of John Perriam Jenkins, a mariner, and Elizabeth Melville Hay.

In 1896 Ellen married William Alexander Gould, a timber yard foreman, and they had two sons.

William died in Dunedin in 1941 and Ellen died on 17 November 1942. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
