Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth McGregor was born about 1840 in Scotland.

She married William Barker, a contractor, on 1 March 1864 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire.

They came to New Zealand in the mid-1860s and had, at least, four children.

They lived for a time on Stewart Island before moving to Bluff where Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition.

William died at their home in 1907 and Elizabeth died on 8 August 1912, they are buried together in the Bluff Cemetery.

Elizabeth’s obituary said 'in her day she was a prominent figure in the social life of the Bluff, and many friends will retain pleasant memories of her genial hospitality.'
