Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Edith Henrietta Prudence Townley was born in 1853 in Shoreditch, London – the daughter of Francis Samuel Townley, a coffee house keeper, and Ann Sarah Newman.

She emigrated to New Zealand and she married Samuel John Loring, a railway traffic manager, on 30 September 1873 in Dunedin.

They had seven children and lived in Invercargill for a few years before moving to Dunedin where Edith signed the suffrage petition.

Samuel died from appendicitis in Greymouth in 1897 and Edith died on 14 January 1900 in Dunedin, they are buried in the family grave in the Green Island Cemetery.
