Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Eliza was born in Ireland about 1813, she was married to John Fox, a mason’s labourer.
The family emigrated to Lanarkshire, Scotland in the 1850s.
John died in the 1860s and Eliza emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Janet Court to join her two sons and daughter. (See 57 Mary Fraser)
When she signed the suffrage petition she was living in Peter St, Caversham with her son Hugh and family.
She died on 26 December 1905 at the age of 97 and is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
Her obituary said she 'identified herself with the Caversham Baptist Church shortly after her arrival in the colony, and has been an active worker in the interests of that body ever since. Even within the last few years she has been greatly blessed in teaching the children, who will miss her genial kindnesses.'
