Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Eliza Annie Kingswell was born on 10 March 1854 in Tasmania, Australia – the daughter of William Burcher Kingswell, a farmer, and Elizabeth Bryan.

She came to New Zealand with her family in the early 1860s and they settled in Bluff.

Eliza married Samuel Nichol, a merchant, in 1871 and they had three children.

When Eliza signed the suffrage petition the family were living at their home 'Morningside' in Bluff.

She died at her home on 1 August 1913 – her obituary said she 'was an enthusiastic church worker, and for many years occupied the position of president to St Matthew’s Ladies’ Guild, Bluff.' She 'was always to the fore in movements for the social welfare of the township, and her departure has deprived many of a faithful friend.'

Samuel died in 1924, they are buried in the family grave in the Bluff Cemetery.
