The 1893 electoral roll confirms Great King St

Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth was born about 1824, she was married to William Fleet, an expressman, and she arrived in New Zealand about 1864.

Elizabeth and William had two children, one who appears to have died in infancy.

They also had an adopted daughter Margaret Hunter. Margaret’s parents were friends of the Fleets and her mother died in childbirth at the Fleet’s home when Margaret was five-years-old. William had a problem with alcohol and, in 1868, a court case was held regarding a removal job that William had done. 'The defendant exhibited signs of insanity' and 'he was labouring under acute mania'. He was admitted to the asylum.

In 1876 William was trying to sell his business due to ill health, he died in December that year.

Elizabeth ran a store in Great King St where she signed the suffrage petition.

Also living in Great King St were her son and his family. (See 93 Mrs H Fleet)

Elizabeth died at her home on 21 June 1909, she is buried with William in the Northern Cemetery.
