Elizabeth/Bessie Henderson was born in Victoria, Australia in 1859 — the daughter of William Henderson and Margaret Hervey/Harvey. (See 33 Mrs Henderson)

The family travelled to New Zealand in about 1861 and settled at Highcliff on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin.

Elizabeth married George Charles Challis, a nurseryman and widower with one child, on 8 April 1903.

Elizabeth died on 2 September 1945 at her home in Macandrew Bay, she is buried in the Henderson family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.

George died one month later, he is buried in the Challis family grave also grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
