Elizabeth Glover was born in about 1828 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England – daughter of John Thompson Glover, a grocer and Jane Holden.
Elizabeth travelled to Shanghai and on 5 October 1858 at the Holy Trinity Church, Shanghai, she married John Rossi Hooper. They had a daughter in Shanghai before they moved back to England about 1860.
They had four more children in England before they sailed for New Zealand in 1874 as cabin passengers on the Haddon Hall. Elizabeth's daughter Maude also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.
John worked as a wine, spirit and tea merchant, also managing a gold sluicing company in the 1890s.
Elizabeth died on 4 December 1911 and John died in 1917. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
