Elizabeth Chase Battson was born in 1854 in Clerkenwell, London, the daughter of Francis Battson, a coal merchant, and Ann Chase.
Elizabeth’s family emigrated to Otago about 1860. Her mother died in 1863 and her father re-married two years later.
Elizabeth attended North Dunedin School and became a pupil teacher in 1869. She continued this work until 1875 when she resigned due to ill health.
Elizabeth married John Brown in 1876. They had seven children. When she signed the suffrage petition the family was living in Stafford Street, Dunedin.
Elizabeth died on 8 September 1926 and John died in 1936. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
