Ellen Maria Dierce (nee Jowers) was born in 1869 to Joseph and Maria Jowers (nee Herring) of Essex, England. The thirteen-year-old Ellen, her mother and father, and two older brothers arrived in Christchurch aboard the Crusader in March 1883.

In June 1889 Ellen married Martin George Wagner Dierce, the son of John and Maragaret Dierce (Margaret also signed this Sheet of the Petition). The couple had no children.

Ellen was widowed in 1925, and when she died on 12 February 1949 she left her estate of £2000 to her nephew, Joseph Muir Jowers.
