Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

Emily Barker gives her address as Ashburton on the petition but at least from 1885 she was living in Waihi, Woodbury which is between Geraldine, Timaru and Ashburton. She was married to John Mathias Barker. Emily was an artist and her daughter, Esther Studholme Barker (1885 – 1975) followed in her footsteps. Esther is best known for designing the concept for the Church of the Good Shepherd at Tekapo. The Church was drawn up and built by architect R.S.D. Harman of Christchurch, based on a 15cm plasticine model that Ester created.
