Three of the five Bowring sisters signed the petition: 35-year-old Frances, 22-year-old Emily, and 27-year-old Louisa (Sheet 13). All three women remained in Auckland, where their parents, Elizabeth and Alfred, had emigrated as newlyweds from London in 1855. Frances (1858-1922) lived as a spinster, and Louisa married Albert Spencer in 1894. In 1901 Emily (1871-1951) married a poultry farmer from Avondale, Samuel James, and they had one daughter, Phyllis. The family lived at 31 Riversdale Road. Emily was widowed in 1947, and died in 1951. Their brother was the artist Walter Bowring (1874-1931).
