Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emma Carter was born about 1854 in England.

In 1872, she married Harry Thomas Brown, a gas stoker, in the Greenwich registration district in England.

They had one son before they emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Hindostan. Another 11 children were born in New Zealand; at least one died in infancy.

The family lived in Cutten St, St Kilda, Dunedin and Harry worked at the City Gasworks.

In January 1907, Harry slipped while carrying a tramway rail at work and developed a hernia. He was operated on but developed peritonitis and died.

Emma applied for compensation for herself and her dependent children. In October, Emma and her five dependent children were awarded £329 11s 7d, to be divided between them.

Emma died on 15 April 1926. She is buried with Harry in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
