Emma Eccles was born Emma Nelson in Auckland in 1870. She married Robert Patterson Eccles at the age of 21 in Auckland. The couple lived first in Avondale, where Robert worked at the Avondale Hospital, the main mental health institution in Auckland. They had six children and later moved to East Tamaki, where they had a farm.
