Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Annie Rochell was born about 1852 in England.

She married Joseph Evans, a blacksmith, in Staffordshire in 1871 and they had one son before they emigrated to Otago in 1873 on the Surat. The ship was wrecked on the coast early in 1874 – the passengers were saved but their luggage was lost.

They settled in Dunedin where they had a further eight children, one who died in infancy.

When Annie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Richardson St, St Kilda, Dunedin.

Joseph died in 1926 and Annie died at her home on 8 February 1949, at the age of 96 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.

Annie’s obituary said her 'main interest outside her home was in church work. After being a member of the Caversham Baptist Church, she joined the South Dunedin Baptist Church, of which she was the oldest member at the time of her death – she had been a member for 70 years.'
