Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Fortune McFadyen was born on board the Mariner en route to Otago in 1849  - the daughter of Hugh McFadyen, a cooper and clerk, and Hellen Hunter Morison.

She married James Sandilands Douglas, the licencee of Wain’s Royal Hotel, Dunedin, on 12 January 1872 in Dunedin and they had nine children, one who died in infancy.

James was declared insolvent in 1881 and the hotel’s licence was transferred.

James then worked as a plumber and when Agnes signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Forth St, Dunedin.

Agnes died on 21 May 1910 and James died in 1913, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
