Biographical information provided by Flora Feltham for the He Tohu exhibition:

Amelia Elizabeth Joynt was born Amelia De La Hunt in County Cavan, Ireland, in 1832. She married Charles Joynt in the early 1850s, and by 1860 the couple had immigrated to New Zealand. They settled on the corner of Picton and Paget Streets, Ponsonby, and Charles worked as a clerk.  Between 1853 and 1872 they had 11 children.

Amelia signed the Women’s Suffrage Petition with both of her surviving daughters: Charlotte Joynt and Annie S. Tregaskis

Amelia died in 1905, aged 72. She left all her money and her household furniture to her eldest daughter, Charlotte, who stayed in the family home.
