Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Grace Smith was born about 1830 in Peebleshire, Scotland. She married William Gibson, a railway porter, on 18 November 1845 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

They appear to have travelled around, possibly with William’s job.

They had a daughter born in Ireland, a son born in England and three sons born in Glasgow before they emigrated to Otago about 1875. Their son Robert had arrived in 1874.

The family settled in Rockyside in Caversham, Dunedin and were there when Grace signed the suffrage petition.

William died in 1893 and Grace died on 19 May 1903. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
