Biographical information provided by Sandra Falconer for the He Tohu exhibition:

According to details on her death certificate, Harriet Bird (nee Hale) was born in 1830 to Elizabeth and William Hale in Tring, Hertfordshire. At 27 years of age she married carpenter Alfred Bird in Newington, London. Harriet and Alfred had six children aged between 4-14 years when the family migrated to New Zealand on the ship Corona, arriving at Port Chalmers in 1874. In her will, dated 1904, Harriet gives her residence as Caversham, and she bequeathed two sections of land on David St to her daughter Alice. At her death in 1910, Harriet was living in Sydenham, Christchurch and is buried on the north-eastern side of Addington Cemetery.
