Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Helen Whyte was born in 1854 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Charles Whyte, a farmer, and Margaret Anderson. (See 84 Margret Whyte)
She sailed for Otago in 1856 on the “Gil Blas” with her family and they settled at North Taieri, south of Dunedin.
Helen married butcher Alexander Barron on 29 January 1885 in the North Taieri parish.
They had four sons and when Helen signed the suffrage petition they were living in Factory Rd, Mosgiel.
In 1908 Alexander retired and they moved to Dunedin.
Alexander died in 1922 and Helen died at her home on 4 December 1926 – they are buried in the family grave in the East Taieri Cemetery.
