Helen Nicol was a leading temperance campaigner who was active in the suffragist movement. She was born on 29 May 1854 in Edinburgh, Scotland, the sixth of 10 surviving children of Margaret Cairns Smith and her husband, David Nicol, head gardener at the Orphan Hospital in Edinburgh.
A biography of Helen Lyster Nicol (1854 - 1932) appears in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography. A leading suffragist, her mother Margaret and sister Lavinia also signed Sheet 115.
